Holy Man at Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal

The blazing sun shines down, warming the ground as we walk through Pashupatinath Temple, exploring every nook and cranny from behind a camera lens. A bead of sweat drips down the back of my leg as I take shelter from the heat under a nearby eave.

As we enter the courtyard of another temple, my attention is drawn to an old man who is sitting in the sun, in the middle of the courtyard.

Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal

He is sitting indian style and smoking a cigarette. In front of him lies a pack of smokes and a box of matches.

He looks to be sitting on a mat made of straw, which protects his bare feet and legs from the blistering cement.

I’m captured by his fluid and tranquil movements. He gives off a sense of calmness.

I’m not sure who he is, but to me he embodies the spirit of a holy man. He has an air of holiness (and smoke) around him.

He is so in the zone that he has forgotten to ash!  Nothing breaks a deep meditation faster than a pile of hot ashes on your bare legs.

  6. Nice pic! What’s he smoking? A cigarette, not a… 😉 Right?

    1. I assume it’s a cigarette since he has a pack of smokes in front of him, but ya never know since weed does grow wild in Nepal and holy men are known to be big smokers.

  7. Grace-Pinayonthemove says:

Oh so it was a cigarette ;p I once watched this feature where holy men were allowed to smoke mj all they can during a religious festival in Nepal. I thought this may have been it =)

    1. Yea, I was told it’s accepted at certain times of the year and if you remember the photo of the Sadhu on our site, he has very glossy eyes. 😉
