As San Diego locals, we get consistent requests for our recommendations on what restaurants and attractions to include during a short stay to the area. So, when Enterprise Rent-A-Car asked us to participate in their #EnterpriseEverywhere campaign, we figured it was the perfect time to share our insight into San Diego in a blog post.
Enterprise wants to encourage travelers to explore quick weekend getaways because we all know vacation time is limited. San Diego is on many travelers’ must-visit destination list and with temperate weather twelve months out of the year, it’s a great year-round vacation destination.
Sample 2-Day San Diego Itinerary
Arrival to San Diego airport, where you can catch an Enterprise shuttle to their car rental facility, just a few minutes away from the terminals. One thing people don’t always realize before they visit San Diego is that you need a car, unless you don’t leave the downtown area or limit yourself to the minimal stops on the coaster. There’s much more to San Diego than downtown, so it’s a great spot for a road trip.
Before you head to your hotel, I highly recommend stopping in Little Italy for an authentic Italian dinner. Any of the restaurants in Little Italy are worth a visit. We have yet to be disappointed by a meal here.
Kayaking and Wildlife Viewing in La Jolla: If you are staying in downtown San Diego, head north along the coast to visit La Jolla — one of the most picturesque destinations in Southern California. I could spend all day here because there is so much to see.
Pelicans, seals, and seagulls make their home near La Jolla Cove and put on quite a show for wildlife lovers. The coastal walk along the road is great for viewing them from afar, but our favorite way to experience La Jolla is by kayak. You can rent one for an hour or book a guided tour, which usually includes paddling through sea caves near Children’s Pool.
After a day of playing in the water, you’ll be hungry. La Jolla has some of the best restaurants in San Diego, including Herringbone, George’s at the Cove, and The Steakhouse at Azul. Just remember to make reservations in advance.
Brunch at Kona Kai’s Vessel Restaurant: One of our favorite restaurants near downtown San Diego. Make sure to try the Huevos Rancheros and Pulled Pork Benedict — or fish tacos if you are in the mood for lunch.
A Visit to Beautiful Balboa Park: You can choose from several museums, gardens (the Japanese Friendship Garden is my favorite), and walking paths. It’s great for photography too!
