Review of President Hotel Splendid
During our time in Taormina, we were fortunate enough to stay at the President Hotel Splendid – a five-story hotel situated above the main street of Corso Umberto, near Porta Messina.
Upon arrival to President Hotel Splendid, we were graciously welcomed and informed of the various amenities of the establishment by Maya who is well versed in English. (Unfortunately for me, my Italian never developed well enough to have full on conversations.)
Our room, located on the forth floor, had a private bathroom and balcony which overlooked the breathtaking Ionian coast. The bathroom is, of course, in true European style – equipped with a bidet. A television is also included in the room, but don’t plan on watching it unless you’ve brushed up on your Italian. There were no English channels that I could find.
Down the hall on the fourth floor is where you will find the restaurant. A buffet breakfast is served daily which includes breads, meats, yogurt, cereal and hard-boiled eggs. I’ve never seen so many jellies to choose from. They also had plenty of Nutella on hand, a personal favorite.
Since the restaurant is also situated on the fourth floor, it too has a breathtaking view of the coastline.
You can always relax by the pool and grab one of the many books provided on your way there. The hotel lobby provides a comfy area to access the free wifi or plan an excursion to the surrounding areas. You may even be invited to play the piano by one of the friendly staff members.
The front desk is always happy to help you find a bus, give walking directions or suggest local activities and restaurants. To enjoy some deep relaxation, inquire about a half hour massage by the pool for 20 Euros.
A word of caution; if you arrive by taxi, make sure you tell the driver you are looking for Hotel Splendid on Via Cappuccini. Our taxi driver didn’t know the name ‘President Hotel’ and we forgot to write down the address.
The bus station is a ten-minute walk from the center of town. This is where you will be arriving and departing if you take a flight to or from Catania. The streets are paved and you can easily roll luggage with wheels up and down the hill.
Once you reach the Porta Messina arch at the beginning of Corso Umberto, continue straight up the hill and make your first right onto Via Cappuccini (through another stone arch). President Hotel Splendid will be on your left, just a few minutes up the road, in a large, white building.
If you arrive by train, you can either catch a taxi or the Interbus. Taxis run about 15 Euro and the bus will only set you back a few Euros per person. The busses run less frequently on Sundays.
We would highly recommend a stay at President Hotel Splendid if your travels take you to the charming town of Taormina, Sicily. It’s a good price, great service and perfect location. What more could you ask for?
We want to thank the staff of President Hotel Splendid and Hostel Bookers for hosting us during our time in Taormina and making our stay exceptional.
