A Life Changing Travel Experience on Catalina Island

Pelicans on Catalina Island

We never wrote much about our Catalina Island trip, except for our Catalina Island Photo Essay, even though it is one of our favorite travel memories and an experience that has impacted my life more than I had realized at the time. Up until this point, I didn’t feel like my writing could do the experience justice.

Our initial plan for this trip included camping with a few friends at Two Harbors campground and hiking the surrounding area.

Life had other plans for us.

We had a quiet and somewhat uneventful first evening and woke up to stunning views of the Pacific ocean. One of our friends who joined us on this trip mentioned that he knew someone who ran a kid’s camp just a few miles from where we were staying. He gave him a quick call to see if he had some time to hang out that day.

I had never met Travis, but he instantly offered to pick us all up in a speed boat and bring us over to his camp to chill for the day.

From the moment we met Travis, it felt like we had all been friends since childhood. The same goes for all of the people we met that weekend at this remote community on the island of Santa Catalina.

When travel brings you an unexpected change of plans, sometimes the change can end up being better than you could have possibly imagined.

Howlands Landing, Catalina Island

Our amazing weekend on Catalina Island consisted of:

Stand up paddle boarding with a group of friends in 80 degree weather

Organic farming and hiking with a guide who is full of knowledge

Organic and delicious meals for breakfast and lunch prepared by amazing cooks

Bonfire BBQ with fresh fish caught by one of the camp counselors that day, fresh veggies and fruit from the organic garden

Shooting stars all night

Sleeping in cool little houses on the beach

Catalina Island Camping - Howlands Landing

Waking up to a blanket of fog along the beach with nobody else in sight

Kayaking at 3 am in Phosphorescent waters

Unique company – People from all over the world who are friendly, welcoming and interesting

Have you had an unexpected experience while traveling that turned out to be better than you could have imagined?
